Where cannabis is actually legal to consume on the Westside

Buying legal cannabis in California is easy. Finding somewhere legal to actually use it is the part visitors underestimate — the default answer to "can I use this here" is no almost everywhere outside a private home, and the Westside's beaches and boats are no exception (see our beach rules and boating guides for the specifics on those two).

What "public consumption" actually covers

California bans cannabis consumption in any public place — that's sidewalks, parks, beaches, boats on open water, parking lots, and inside a vehicle whether it's moving or parked. It's the same category of rule as California's open-container law for alcohol, just stricter: there's no equivalent to "a beer at a park bench" for cannabis anywhere in the state.

Where it's genuinely legal

Private residence, with the owner's permission. This is the backbone rule — a private home or a rented private property where the owner allows it. If you're staying with someone locally, this is the simplest legal option. Licensed on-site consumption lounges. California law allows dispensaries to hold a separate consumption-lounge license, though they remain uncommon; where one exists, it's the only legal public-facing option, and it's worth asking a licensed shop directly (like the ones we cover in the Marina) whether one operates nearby.

The hotel question

Almost every hotel on the Westside is a smoke-free property, cannabis included, enforced with real cleaning fees. A hotel room is private property in the legal sense, but the no-smoking house rule overrides it in practice. Smoke-free formats — edibles, especially — sidestep the issue entirely and are the realistic choice for a hotel stay.

The short version

Default to "no" everywhere outside a private residence you have permission to use, and treat a hotel room the same as a public place for smokeable products even though it technically isn't one. It's a stricter standard than most visitors expect, and it's the one rule on this entire site worth over-following rather than testing.
