Marina del Rey hotels, compared by walkability and vibe
The Marina's whole pitch is that you park once and walk to the water, so we compare hotels on the thing that matters: what's actually on foot from the lobby. All of these put you 15 minutes from LAX.
On the water, boutique end
Marina del Rey Hotel sits at the tip of a mole with slips on three sides — the closest thing to staying on a yacht without owning one. Waterside pool, walkable to the main restaurant row. The pick for anniversaries and anyone who came specifically for the harbor.
Jamaica Bay Inn fronts Mother's Beach — the calm lagoon — which makes it the family sleeper pick: kids wade at a lifeguarded beach steps from the room, and the bike path runs past the door.
On the water, full-service
Marina del Rey Marriott is the biggest of the harbor set, across from the beach-adjacent basin with a lively pool scene and easy access to Venice via the bike path. The safe, does-everything choice.
Hotel MdR (DoubleTree) sits a few blocks inland toward the Villa Marina shops — you trade the direct view for newer-renovation value and easy parking; the harbor is a 10-minute walk.
Budget-functional
Foghorn Harbor Inn is the small, plain, genuinely waterfront-adjacent option on Washington Blvd near the Venice Pier end — the pick when the room is just a base camp. The Washington Blvd strip (coffee, tacos, and the Marina's licensed dispensary among them) is your main street.
Three booking notes locals would give you
"Harbor view" varies wildly — a basin full of masts vs a parking structure with water behind it; confirm the view category, not just the words. Summer weekends compress availability because of boat shows and holiday regattas; book brunch reservations the day you book the room. House policies differ on everything from pets to smoking of any kind — most prohibit smoking outright, so if your weekend includes cannabis, plan on low-odor formats and read our beach rules guide for where consumption is and isn't legal (short version: private property with permission only).
